What are the proportions between the Silver Jubilee and the Major in a volume and loudness scale? What amp was "more important" than the other? If you had to choose, would you suggest a Major or a Jubilee to get near his tone?
Dave Lee: "I would suggest a Major. The main aspect of John's tone (amp wise) is: Clean. Loud. Punchy. Real punchy.
Believe it or not, the clean channel on a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier can work. (Master up all the way, and gain at about 9 or 10 o'clock. Bass up pretty high).
Also "Divided by 13" makes an almost exact replica of a Major. John actually tested one of of those Divided amps during the recording of Stadium. John said "It sounds great! But it's just not a Marshall."
I was expecting him to point out the Jubilee instead... this quite surprised me, as in every out-band context John used to play the Silver Jubilee and not the Major... also, the Major, doesn't seems quite crunchy to me ad John's tone. He is saying that John's tone was clean and punchy... I agree on the "punchiness", but not at all on the "clean"!!
