Dave Mail 26: '61 Stratocasters - and locking vintage tuning pegs

Did the other Stratocasters (the '61 Fiesta Red and the Olympic White) have any modifications you made, besides the straplocks and tuning pegs? Did they have their original pickups?

Dave Lee: "Those guitars were left stock. And by that time, we had stopped using locking tuners. I had figured out a way to make the stock tuners stay in tune mostly by overlapping the strings while winding them."

Could you tell us more about this technique of locking tuners?

Dave Lee: "It's hard to explain. But basically, I would overlap the strings as I wound them on the peg a couple of times. So the pressure of the string tension keeps the string from slipping when John would stretch notes so far. I'd have to film a video to show it. It ends up not looking kind of sloppy. But it's effective. Jesse Carmichael (Maroon 5) has a couple of Strats with vintage tuners. Towards the end of February we're doing some shows. Remind me and I'll do a "how to" video."
