You worked with the band since the One Hot Minute album. How do you remember Frusciante's comeback? Was there a lot of expectation?
Dave Lee: "To be clear, I didn't work on the One Hot Minute album. I started just days before the One Hot Minute tour. When John came back, there was much expectation, as you can imagine. When he first came back, he was under alot of pressure. He was very quiet. I often joke that for the first three months "he didn't say two words to me." Of course that's an exaggeration. But I did think he didn't like me. Or didn't like they way I did my job. Then one day at a soundcheck in Verona, Italy, I wasn't paying attention, while he was waiting to give me his guitar. I looked at him (startled) and said "oops! Sorry". He smiled and said "You're doing a great job. And I really appreciate it."
At that point I realized we were going to be just fine."
